The new health measures have really put a damper to the season of respective sports organizations throughout the province.
The hockey season seemed to be suspended right when it was getting started.
But before the season came to a halt, the Warman Female U15 AA Wildcats team had been playing phenomenal hockey.
Warman started the season 6-0 and showed no signs of slowing down.
There are nine players that were on this team last year and that experience contributed to the early success.
Two of those second year players include captain Brielle Minish and Avery Switzer.
Minish actually hails from Rosetown and she is playing in Warman because that is the closest centre to her community that has AA hockey.
She doesn’t mind travelling back-and-forth for practices and games because she is very committed to the sport.
“It’s a lot of commitment but it’s good. The car rides are fun and I get a lot of school work done and stuff, so it’s good,” she said.
This is Minish’s first year as captain of the Female U15 AA Wildcats and she knows that it takes leadership to fill that role, but the team is great to work with.
“We’ve got a good group of girls and it’s fun to lead them because they are hard workers and they make it easy,” she said.
The league that the Wildcats play in features talented teams, but Minish is up to the challenge.
“There are some good players in the league and there is a whole lot of competitive (action) going on and that’s good,” she said.
Hockey is definitely a sport that Minish is devoted to as she has been playing the game since the U7 (initiation) level and it is something she wants to keep pursuing as she gets older.
Switzer has come a long way since she started playing the sport.
Before the U15 level, Switzer had never played higher than the B division and her first year in the U15 division she made the AA feamle team.
She said she has worked hard to gain those skills she needs, to play a more intense level of hockey.
The AA level is very competitive and it takes a lot more work to prepare for each game but Switzer is up to the task.
“It’s a little more competitive, so you got to be ready and it takes a lot more commitment,” she said. “It’s way more aggressive it’s more mental and you really have to be prepared for every game.”
Switzer has been playing hockey since she was six years old and she wants to continuing playing the sport at high level as long as she can.
“I love it so much, I really hope I go far, it’s my favourite thing to do,” she said.
Right now the season for the Wildcats is in limbo and if the season does resume later on, hopefully the team can pick up right where they left off.
