A 30-year-old woman was killed and three children were injured in a collision between a vehicle and train in Rosthern on Sunday, November 1.

The collision occurred at around 10:00 a.m. at a level crossing on Highway 312 a short distance west of the intersection of Highway 312 and Highway 11.

Rosthern RCMP said their initial investigation revealed a car carrying four occupants was travelling east on Highway 312 when it was stuck while crossing over the train tracks. The train was travelling south.

The 30-year-old female driver was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel.

Three other passengers in the car, all female youths believed to be between the ages of 7 and 12 years, were all in the back seat and transported to hospital with what were reported to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Rosthern Fire Rescue first responders, Rosthern Ambulance and STARS air ambulance all responded to the collision.

An RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service also attended the scene.

Further investigation by the Rosthern RCMP determined the rail crossing equipment, including the lights and the bell, appeared operational while police officers were on scene. The rail line is privately owned.

Highway 312 on both sides of the railway crossing was blocked for most of the day on Sunday as crash investigators conducted their work.

The investigation is ongoing.
