Charlotte Goertzen is hoping to bring a sense of compassion along with fiscal responsibility to the Mayor’s chair in Osler.
Goertzen retired last year after 32 years of civil service with the Ministry of Corrections and Policing. Born and raised in the Hague area, she has lived in Osler for 16 years. She is a licensed yoga practitioner and restorative exercise practitioner, and has volunteered countless hours helping cancer patients with restorative exercises.
“I’m a compassionate person who is driven by service,” said Goertzen. “I’m offering to be a servant of this town. I love people and that’s why I have taken the time to listen to what the people say. I want to take their concerns and ideas forward to the council table.”
Goertzen said after canvassing virtually the entire community, she believes the biggest issue is the condition of the roads.
“The level of services don’t match the cost of our taxes,” said Goertzen. “In order of priority, the people would like to see the roads repaired. The second priority would be development of a children’s playground on the north end of Osler near the soccer field.”
Goertzen said a group of citizens have been fundraising for this proposed playground, and so far have about $14,000 in the kitty.
“I’m hoping the town can match that and develop a really nice children’s area there so that during tournaments the little ones can play in a safe environment while parents can keep a close eye on both them and the games.”
Goertzen said she also wants to see the town attract a “more diversified” business base, which in turn would stimulate more residential growth.
“I think the town needs to be more open-minded about businesses that are willing to take a chance on our town,” she said.
“I’d also like to see more development on land west and south of Osler.”
