Warman’s Dane Giesbrecht was the U13 champion during the 94th annual Saskatchewan Junior Boy’s Golf Championship.
There were 43 golfers between multiple divisions entered in the three day competition, and a separate girls championship coincided with the event from July 14 to 16, at the Elmwood Golf Club Swift Current.
The 12-year-old Geisbrecht said he was excited to win the championship because it was the first time he competed at this event and it is definitely one of the highlights of his young career.
“I already have a couple (highlights), but this is pretty cool too,” he said.
Giesbrecht only had two other golfers competing in his division and he had a great start after golfing a 77 the first day. His other competitors had quite a bit of catching up to do, as Buena Vista’s Elias Haukeness recorded an 86 while Jayden Chernoff of Estevan golfed a 92.
Giesbrecht continued to play well in the second round and he scored a 72, which ended up being his best personal score of the tournament.
Giesbrecht had substantial lead heading in to the final day of competition and even though he said it wasn’t his best round of golf, he still recorded a 76 for a three day total of 225.
Giesbrecht said he felt confident that he was going to do well, at the Saskatchewan Junior Boys Golf Championship, since he played at that same course a few weeks before the tournament.
He mentioned this is a tournament he wants to continue to be successful at, as he gets older and competes in the other divsions.
Throughout this current golf season Giesbrecht has been playing in the U15 division, which he enjoys because it presents more of a challenge to him.
“I learned that if I was playing in a younger category this whole year that I would win more often, but in the older one, (U15), there are more players and they’re better, so it’s more challenging,” he said.
In the two U15 tournaments he played in earlier in the season, he placed third out of 15 golfers and fourth out of 14 golfers respectively.
Even though he picked up a win in the U13 division his goal right now is to win a tournament in the U15 division this year.
There is still a lot of golf left for Giesbrecht this summer as he is planning to play in four more tournaments before the end of the season.
