Venture Heights students gear up for Seussical musical

Kids at Venture Heights School in Martensville are counting down the days.

Not till Christmas, but until show time.

The school’s musical performance of Seussical Jr. is coming up December 12 and 13, and the excitement is building, according to the play’s director, teacher Craig Chase.

“We have about 30 kids involved in this year’s performance,” said Chase in an interview at the school on Wednesday, November 26. “They’re a very talented, and dedicated, group of students.”

Chase and a team of teachers have been working with Grades 5 to 8 students since September on the school’s annual musical, and it’s coming down to the last few weeks.

“We’re getting close,” said Chase. “So everyone is putting in a lot of time in rehearsals right now. The kids come in early morning for practice, and then also during their lunch hour and after school.

“Some of these kids are devoting up to three hours a day to this play.”

He noted that many of the students bring their unique talents to the production.

“Lots of these kids take music lessons, singing lessons, dancing lessons, or they sing in their church,” said Chase. “We have a wide variety of talent; and we amplify and showcase that talent with our musical production.

“It’s become quite a tradition here because it’s been going on for many years. It’s not just the parents and grandparents who come, but people in the community who turn out to see the performances.”

Teachers and staff are helping with various aspects of the play, including choreography, dancing, singing and acting.

“It’s a team effort to pull it all together,” said Chase.

He said the school chose Seussical Jr. as the musical this year because the reading theme this past fall at the school was Dr. Seuss.

“Dr. Seuss brings a lot of lessons in his books, and that’s translated to the stage in the musical,” said Chase. “The musical has many lessons in its story line, such as accepting differences between people, believing in yourself and accepting who you are as a person.”

Chase said the Seussical Jr. musical features many of the characters from Dr. Seuss’s popular books, including the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Mayzie the Lazy Bird, and Yertl the Turtle.
