Saskatchewan Rush General Manager / Head Coach Derek Keenan announced on Monday, July 23 that the reigning NLL Cup champions have re-acquired veteran defenceman Brett Mydske from the San Diego Seals in exchange for a package of draft picks that include the 10th and 11th overall picks in the upcoming 2018 NLL Entry Draft.
Mydske, a nine-year pro, is the Rush’s all-time leader in games played with the franchise and is regarded as one of the NLL’s top defenders. A week earlier, San Diego selected Mydske with its second-round pick in the 2018 NLL Expansion Draft used to stock the Seals and Philadelphia Wings.
“We are happy to have Brett back. He bleeds our colors,” said Keenan. “There’s a lot of sentiment to this trade. Brett has been with us his entire career and we want him to retire wearing a Rush jersey. And we believe he still has a lot left in the tank, too. I know he’s got three or four years left in him.”
Mydske is an unrestricted free agent but had previously made his intentions known that he did not want to play anywhere except for Saskatchewan.
“I am happy to be back with the Rush,” said Mydske. “Since being drafted to the Rush, I have built lifelong friendships with everyone. The Rush has been the only team I’ve played for and I intend to keep it that way.”
In addition to the two first-round picks, the Rush also sent a 2018 fourth-round selection and a 2019 second-rounder to San Diego. Saskatchewan still holds the fifth-overall pick in the 2018 draft.
Since joining the NLL in 2010, Mydske has amassed 32 goals and 72 points in 152 regular-season games. On the defensive side, he has collected 517 loose ball scoops and 159 caused turnovers, including a career-high 32 in the 2016 season.
Mydske has added seven points, 60 loose balls and 25 caused turnovers in 26 playoff games.
He is unquestionably one the best third-round picks (25th overall, 2009) in NLL history.
“He fills a hole that we did not think we could have filled from within or with the 10th or 11th pick,” added Keenan. “We are fortunate that we have had four of the six best defenders in the league on our team for a long time and Brett is one of them. As a pure defender, there are not many better than him.”
