Clark’s Crossing Gazette picks up newspaper awards

Wayne Shiels’ photo of the mutton-busting event at the 2017 Delisle Rodeo won 1st Place for ‘Best People Photo’ at the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association awards last weekend

The Clark’s Crossing Gazette received a total of 13 awards, including three first-place honours, at the 2018 Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA) Better Newspapers Competition.
The award winners were announced at the SWNA annual meeting on Saturday, April 28.
Gazette photographer Wayne Shiels earned top honours in two categories: Best Wildlife Photo and Best People Photo. The Best Wildlife photo was a close-up of a chickadee published on the front page of Gazette’s January 12, 2017 edition. The Best People photo was of a youngster competing in the mutton-busting event at the Delisle Rodeo, published in the July 20, 2017 issue of the Gazette.
Shiels won second place in the Best Photo Essay category and placed third in the Photographer of the Year category.
Gazette reporter Terry Pugh won first place in the Best Business Story category for his account of a new ethanol and high-protein feed processing plant in Clavet, published in the August 3, 2017 edition of the Gazette.
Pugh was awarded second place in four categories: Columnist of the Year; Best Saskatchewan Arts or Cultural Story; Best Colour Photo; and Best Saskatchewan Recreational Story.
Hilary Klassen and Terry Pugh shared second place honours in the Best K-12 Educational Coverage Series of Stories category.
Hilary Klassen won second place in the Best Healthcare Coverage Series of Stories category.
Ruth Bitner of Dalmeny won third place in the Best Saskatchewan Tourism Story category for an account of her travels to every community in the province south of the 54th parallel.
Gazette owner and publisher Terry Jenson was awarded third place in the Best Hard News Photo category.
Since 2010, the Clark’s Crossing Gazette has earned a total of 94 provincial newspaper awards, including Best Overall Newspaper in 2011.
