Owners of businesses nominated for a Warman-Martensville Business Excellence Award (WMBEXA) gathered in Martensville on Thursday, January 11 to learn details of the competition process.
The third annual business awards gala ceremony, organized by the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC), is slated for May 4 at the Brian King Centre in Warman.
A total of 84 businesses were nominated in five categories, including Business of the Year, Customer Service, Community Involvement, New Business of the Year, and Non-Profit of the Year. To qualify for an award, a nominated business must complete an application form outlining its operations, history, staff and other details by January 31.
A panel of five qualified judges, who will remain anonymous, pore over the applications and make their judgments based on that information.
Finalists in all categories will be announced in mid-March, and winners are announced at the May 4 WMBEXA Gala event.
PSCC Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren told the Martensville gathering this year’s annual awards gala will be recorded and televised by Access Communications. She also noted this was the first time nomination certificates were “hand-delivered” to businesses.
PSCC President Elise Hildebrandt said the annual awards provide area businesses an opportunity to be highlighted. She noted there are a wide range of businesses offering a variety of goods and services in the region.
Roger Grona of Firebird Business Consultants, whose business won the 2017 WMBEXA Marketing Award, told the audience it’s important to devote considerable effort when completing the application process.
“It’s nice to get nominated, but that’s really just the beginning,” said Grona. “We spent at least 30 hours of work on our application last year. You need to take the time to do it properly and include as much relevant information as you can.”
Tracey Fesiuk of Martensville Plumbing and Heating, whose business won the 2017 WMBEXA Business of the Year Award, said it is worthwhile for entrepreneurs to enter the competition.
It offers an opportunity to “take stock” of what you are doing in an objective way, she said.
“This is our 15th year of business,” said Fesiuk. “Winning the award really provided confirmation that we’re doing a lot of things right, and that we provide a valuable service to the community.”
Collette Neudorf of Warman Small Animal Hospital, whose business won the 2017 WMBEXA Community Involvement Award, said the awards competition provides valuable exposure to area businesses and raises the profile of the Chamber of Commerce.
