Warman High School wrestlers Natasha Wiebe and Drake Buechler captured gold in their respective weight classes during the SHSAA Provincial Wrestling championships at Saskatoon’s Mount Royal Collegiate March 9 and 10.
Wiebe competed in the female 50-kg weight class and in her first match of the tournament she eliminated her Holy Cross opponent in under two minutes. In her next two matches she decisioned her Walter Murray competitor 10-4 and beat an O’ Neill wrestler 16-5 in a technical fall.
In the gold medal match, Wiebe dispatched her Martin Collegiate opponent with a fall in 1:52.
Buechler competed in the 56-kg weight class and he started out the tournament defeating his St. Joes opponent with a 10-0 technical fall and repeated that performance against a competitor from O’Neill.
His semi-final was a nail biter as he defeated a Balfour Collegiate competitor 15-14.
In the gold medal match, Buechler scored a 17-6 technical fall against a Campbell competitor, capturing another SHSAA gold medal.
Other athletes from Warman High and Stobart (Duck Lake) also competed at the provincial championships.
Warman High wrestler Dallas Akre earned silver in the 41-kg weight. In his first two matches, he defeated a competitor from Aden Bowman with a fall in 44 seconds and earned a win in 47 seconds against a wrestler from Tommy Douglas.
In the gold medal match, his O’ Neill opponent was too skilled, upsetting Akre with a 10-0 technical fall.
Warman High wrestler Austin Martinuk was eliminated after losses to opponents from Swift Current and Balfour Collegiate, as he competed in the 77-kg weigh class.
Chase Kirkland-Bennett of Warman High wrestled in the 62-kg weight category. He defeated his Centennial challenger before falling to Carpenter High and Martin Collegiate wrestlers.
Stobart’s Marshal Fisher 100 kg weight class. He started with a win over his Martin opponent, but then fell to a Winston Knoll fighter. He bounced back with wins over St. Mary and Aden Bowman competitors, before losing to a Carpenter High challenger, finishing just out of the top four.
In the girls’ competition, Stobart’s Kata Robinson, was unable to reach the top 4 in the 47 kg. She won her first match against a Centennial opponent, but she lost to competitors from O’Neill and Martin Collegiate.
Warman High’s Miriam Shah was unable to advance at the 56-kg weight class after losing to opponents from Centennial and Walter Murray. Similarly, Stobart’s Rae Perrin was eliminated in the 64-kg wight class after losses to Churchill and Carlton wrestlers.
Stobart’s Twyla Gamble finished fourth in the wrestling at 73-kg weight class. She started the tournament with a win over her McLurg High opponent, but then lost to a Campbell wrestler. She bounced back with a win over Walter Murray, but in a bronze medal rematch with the McLurg competitor, she lost a technical fall 16-5.
